Hate Your Student Accommodation? You Might Not Be Stuck

07 October 2026

Moved into your student accommodation and already regretting it? Whether it’s the location, your room, the people you’re living with or the noise, you might be wondering if you’re stuck there for the rest of the year.

The good news? You may have options.

If your accommodation is dirty, too loud, in the wrong location or simply not what you expected, don’t assume you have to put up with it until summer. Your options will depend on the type of accommodation you live in and the contract you’ve signed, so it’s worth checking what you can do before making any decisions.

So, can you actually leave?

First, look at your tenancy or accommodation agreement and have a look at the terms. It should explain what type of agreement you have and what happens if you want to leave early or move somewhere else.

If you’re living in university halls or purpose-built student accommodation, there may be specific rules around ending your agreement early. If your accommodation is having a serious impact on your wellbeing, speak to your university or accommodation provider and explain your situation. They may have a process for reviewing your circumstances and discussing your options.

If you’re renting a house or flat privately, your options will depend on the type of tenancy you have. Many private renters in England now have an Assured Periodic Tenancy (APT), which can give you more flexibility when it comes to leaving. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to give your landlord two months’ notice.

Always check your individual tenancy before giving notice and make sure you understand when your tenancy will officially end and what rent you’ll still be responsible for.

If you could live somewhere better, why settle?

Once you know your options, it’s time to think about what you actually want from your accommodation.

Because your student home should be more than just somewhere you sleep.

Imagine coming home to a clean, modern studio that feels like your own space. Having communal areas where you can hang out with friends, meet people and get out of your room when you fancy a change of scenery. And instead of wondering what there is to do tonight, having events happening right where you live!

That’s exactly what you’ll find at CODE.

If it’s still too confusing, we can help!
