Winter Solstice: A Celebration of Tradition

21 December 2024

The Winter Solstice – is today (Saturday 21st December)!

It’s the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and is a significant time of year in many cultures. Did you know the ancient Stonehenge monument in the UK is aligned with the sunset on the winter solstice?

It is also an important holiday in the Chinese lunar calendar. In southern China, it’s a time for ancestor worship, while in the northern regions, it’s traditional to eat dumplings.

Do you want to make your own dumplings?

Thanks to CODE student accommodation’s location, and there are several Chinese supermarkets nearby where you can buy authentic dumpling ingredients. Of course, you can also find the necessary ingredients in major local UK supermarkets.

Di, our Senior Customer Service and Sales Executive, says her favourite is San Xian Filling (Pork, Shrimp, and Chinese chives) and she makes it like this:

If making dumplings at home is a bit too much of a challenge, you could always consider ordering takeaway from nearby Chinese restaurants to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

Whenever we celebrate Chinese New Year at CODE – which is just part of our FREE events programme – everyone gets involved in making dumplings. It’s always a very popular activity.

Lastly, here are a few photos from our previous dumpling-making sessions to give you inspiration. Wishing everyone a happy Winter Solstice!
